What’s the Difference Between Medigap and Medicare Advantage?

It’s important to know: You cannot have both a Medicare Advantage Plan and a Medigap plan at the same time.

Standardized Plan Options

In Illinois and most states, Medigap plans are standardized and labeled by letters (A, B, D, G, K, L, M, and N).

  • Plan G and Plan N are among the most popular

  • Each lettered plan covers a different set of benefits, but companies offering the same lettered plan must offer identical coverage

Who Should Consider Medigap?

A Medicare Supplement plan may be right for you if:
  • You want predictable, lower out-of-pocket costs
  • You prefer seeing any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare
  • You plan to travel within the U.S. or internationally

When Can You Enroll in a Medigap Plan?

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time 6-month window that begins the month you’re both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

  • During this window, you can buy any Medigap policy offered in your area without medical underwriting

  • After this period, you may be subject to health questions or denied coverage based on medical history

Reminder: Medigap and Part D drug plans must be purchased separately

NOTE:  Outside of your initial enrollment window, you may be subject to medical underwriting.
